Leave-in conditioners can be an unrecognized hero in your daily haircare routine yet it packs more benefits for your hair than you may think.

The hair styling benefits of using a leave-in conditioner can help you better manage unruly hair and control the end result. So whether you are an air-dry type of person, blow-dry to perfection or just trying to get your hair long this winter we will be breaking down your questions about leave-in conditioners and what your hair type needs are.
Before you get started you may want to upgrade your leave-in conditioner. We suggest our OUTRÉ CBD's 8 IN 1 Leave-in Conditioner for the perfect balance of protection and hair repair!
How To Use A Leave In Conditioner
First things first if you have been using a leave in conditioner and haven’t seen the results you were looking for it could be in the application itself. Follow these steps to ensure you are using your leave in conditioner the right way for the best results:
*for a personalized step-by-step by your hair type scroll down
- Start by choosing the right leave in conditioner like our vegan 8 IN 1 Leave In featuring baobab protein, salicylic acid and coconut or our Daily Vitamist + Biotin mist for daily organic and natural ingredients like, sunflower, agave, aloe vera leaf juice and cupuacu with a boost of biotin
- With freshly washed hair ring out excess water followed by wrapping your hair in a towel. This will allow any extra water to be soaked up to avoid a post shower puddle under your feet
- With your hands divide your hair from front to back. If you have extra thick hair you can divide your hair into four sections, two in the front and two in the back
- Start by misting the back sections first as they are the most forgotten about parts of our head when we use styling products. Move your arm from about a 45 degree angle 6 inches from your head down ward. Imagine you are saturating the top part of the strands closer to your scalp all the way through the ends.
- Depending on hair density 2-4 pumps per section
- Repeat in each section
- Comb or brush through from scalp through ends to ensure even distribution of your leave in conditioner
- Add your styling products, air dry or style as desired
You may also refresh next day hair by lightly misting your leave in 6-8 inches above your head working it around globally.
Step By Step HOW TO Use Your Leave In Conditioner For YOUR Hair Type
Fine Hair
People with fine hair can be especially cautious with the types of leave-in conditioners you choose to use. If you have yet to find "the one" we highly recommend Daily Vitamist + Biotin that delivers organic nutrients in a super lightweight mist.
- On freshly washed hair ring out excess water before exiting the shower
- Towel dry your hair to remove any water drippage and remove towel
- Shake out your hair to its natural placement
- Keep your hand with the mist at least 8 inches away from your scalp. This ensures that a your mist reaches a broader area with the least amount of sprays
- Grab your leave in conditioner and mist from the top front of your head, left to right and then down the back of your head.
- Depending on damage levels up to six sprays should do the trick
Damaged Hair
Damaged hair needs TLC from step one through your finish because you need balance with hydration, moisture and repair. We recommend rebalancing your hair health with a vegan and sulfate free shampoo like OUTRÉ Shampoo + CBD followed by 8 IN 1 Leave-In
- On freshly washed hair ring out excess water before exiting the shower
- Gently towel dry your hair to remove any water drippage and remove towel
- Shake out your hair to its natural placement
- Divide your hair using a clip into horizontal sections starting in your nape (imagine a smile face in the back of your head. The shape of the smile is what your parting can look like)
- Grab your leave in conditioner and mist from the top of the strands downward, focusing closely on your ends as those are likely to be the most dry
- Depending on damage levels 2-3 sprays per section
- Keep your spraying distance 4-6 inches from your hair
- Divide your hair into another parting about 2” above your first and repeat the application process
- Repeat this until you have applied your leave-in conditioner to your entire head
- Use a wide tooth comb and comb through to ensure even distribution
- * Note that near your partings you will not need to spray directly onto your scalp because your scalp produces natural oils to keep you moisturized and protected.
Color Treated Hair
If you color or lighten your hair you have different needs to be met. Aside from taking control back on making styling easier, you will need to balance your hair's ph levels which is responsible for keeping haircolor from fading as quickly. PH also helps your color to take evenly. Be sure to add a UV protectant in your leave-in conditioner so that the pesky seasons cannot influence your hair as easy. We recommend 8 IN 1 Leave-In + CBD
- On freshly washed hair ring out excess water before exiting the shower
- Towel dry your hair to remove any water drippage and remove towel
- Shake out your hair to its natural placement
- Divide and lift or secure with a clip half of your hair from the back nape area (this is the part of the head you cannot see if you are looking straight into a mirror)
- Keep your hand with the mist at least 6 inches away from your scalp. This ensures that a your mist reaches a broader area with the least amount of sprays
- Grab your leave in conditioner and mist moving your arm from one side of the head to the other
- Depending on thickness of your hair up to 4 sprays per section should do the trick
- Let your hair out from the clip and repeat this to complete the back
- Divide the left front side of your hair the same and repeat the application
- Divide the right front side of your hair the same and repeat the application
- Follow this with your stylist recommended styling products to air dry and or to your desired style
Frizz Prone Hair
If you have frizzy hair or frizz prone hair it will be especially important to use less friction in all that you do. Meaning don't get rough with your hair and be sure to use a deep hydrating shampoo and conditioner that will help you control frizz without weight your hair down. As you towel dry be mindful not to rough dry your hair with a rubbing but be light handed to keep your cuticle layer unbothered.
- After Shampooing your hair we recommend using a moisturizing conditioner and/ or a hair mask that will deposit hydration and nutrients to calm frizz and unruly hair textures
we recommend this amazing duo for a serious makeover on your frizz or add to cart here - On freshly washed and conditioned hair ring out excess water before exiting the shower
- Gently towel dry your hair to remove any water drippage and remove towel with little to no friction. Meaning do not use the towel rough on the surface of your hair as this will disrupt the cuticle layer and add frizz
- Divide your hair using a clip into horizontal sections starting in your nape (imagine a smile face in the back of your head. The shape of the smile is what your parting can look like)
- Grab your leave in conditioner and mist from the top of the strands downward, focusing on where you saw frizz prior to your shower
- Depending on how thick your hair is (fine hair can use up to 2 sprays while thick hair can use up to 4)
- Ensure that the distance with your sprayer is approximately 6” away from your head
- Divide your hair into another parting about 2” above your first and repeat the application process
- Repeat this until you have applied your leave-in conditioner to your entire head
- Complete this with your choice of styling oil and or your preferred styling cream
Curly Hair
Curly hair texture is one of our favorites but we're no stranger to knowing it comes with more maintenance. If your hair takes forever to dry it is telling you that your hair is lacking moisture. Due to the cuticle constantly in a spiral we can use extra nutrients, hydration if we don't our hair can easily slip into dry brittle ends. We recommend a dense hydrating leave in like our CBD leave-in layered with a reparative hair oil found here.

Your Questions Answered!
Can You Use A Leave In Conditioner Everyday?
Each hair type is different. If you have naturally oily hair you may benefit by the rebalancing properties OUTRÉ’s 8 IN 1 leave-in conditioner can do through the benefits of CBD if you use this everyday or every other day. However if you have fine hair and rarely use products you may need to re apply every two days. Dry hair, colored hair or curly hair textures can benefit from the daily use of leave in conditioners if you apply mid strand through your ends.
Do You Put A Leave In Conditioner On Wet Or Dry Hair?
Generally speaking, getting into the routine of knowing your leave in conditioner is the first step after your shower on freshly washed hair. There are exceptions to using your leave in conditioner as a hairstyle refresher, soothing a sunburn on the scalp or if you choose to use it as a scalp treatment for dandruff.
What Is The Point Of Leave In Conditioner?
The point of your leave in conditioner is that you don’t rinse it out. Our skin generally takes about 27 seconds to soak up around 70% of what you put on it. Hair absorbs much more than that so by leaving a light weight conditioner in your hair you are allowing more time for your hair to soak up essential vitamins, nutrients while protecting your hair from Ultra Violet lights and sun radiation. A leave in conditioner is also a fantastic way to make your hair easier to style and more controlled if you prefer to air dry. Leave-in conditioners are also great for those who color or lighten their hair color. It evens the porosity (what your hair soaks up) which allows your color to take more evenly and last longer.
How Long Do You Leave In A Leave In Conditioner?
You will want to leave in your leave-in conditioner until the next time you wash your hair. You will want to get all of the benefits of this style prep product so be sure it is the first step after towel drying your hair.
Can Conditioner Be Used As A Leave In Conditioner?
Conditioners can serve as a leave-in conditioner but seem to be more beneficial for those with extreme damage, extremely dry hair or extra curly hair textures. Think of the scale of conditioning and hydration concentration :
1) the most dense is a hair mask like our Instant Repair Hair Mask + CBD
2) a great balancing conditioner to mimic hair’s natural nutrients like the ones you use after shampoo
3) a super light weight mist with styling benefits and sun protection all in one
Even those listed under the exceptions could benefit from using a conditioner as a leave-in conditioner for shorter spans of time to rebalance their hair then graduate into a leave-in conditioning routine.
Now that you have become a leave-in conditioner pro you may think it's time to upgrade your experience with the right product! OUTRÉ's 8 IN 1 + CBD leave in conditioner not only gives you 8 benefits from health of your scalp through your ends it will also help your hairstyling routine become easier by calming frizz and making your hair more manageable.
